The Practice

This room is for what actually happens when a few people keep the watch over the wire.

Not the plan. The Sunday itself: the picture that froze in the middle of the prayer, the child who wandered out of frame during the reading, the brother who joined twenty minutes late, the week nobody started the call at all and the awkward business of starting again the week after. We have set down the ten steps and the prayers in full and a walk-through of a first call, and every word of it was written by people who keep it. None of it survives a real connection unchanged.

So this is the room for the changes. What you dropped because it did not fit the people you have. What you added because the silence on the line needed something in it. What you tried twice, gave up on, and have wondered about since. How you handle the time zones. What you do when there is nobody to call and you keep the hour alone.

Nobody here is grading anyone. There is no correct version of this and no one keeping score, and a call with four faces on it who came reluctantly is still a watch.

The room is empty today. Somebody has to write the first letter.

What fell apart in your third week, and what did you do instead?

Letters are read before they are printed. Nothing appears here until a person has read it, and replies come the way letters come: in days, not minutes.

The letters

No letters yet. The room opens empty and stays that way until somebody writes the first one; nothing here is going to pretend otherwise.
